Eat to enjoy, not to lose weight

This article in the New York Times may seem a bit redundant to some, but I'm encouraged to see it in the venerable Gray Lady herself. It saddens me a bit that the notion of eating for pleasure rather than weight loss is such a novelty, but there it is. At least it's out there.

They had me up until "The real question, is whether better eating can translate into weight loss."

And not just because of the incorrect comma.

This is really awesome - it is pretty obviously just a small step (encouraging food enjoyment while still retaining the moralizing aspects of weight loss in the background) but it IS a step in the right direction. Now if only we could get rid of that pesky undertone of “If you’re going to indulge in something, just try and walk it off or limit it to once a week.”

But I'm sure it'll happen eventually.

This reminds me of my disappointment with Gretchen Rubin's Happiness Project blog. Supposedly she is 'test driving' strategies for creating happiness in one's life, and will be publishing a book about it. But recently it has been focused on losing weight and not eating treats, and how moderation doesn't work for her so she is going to find happiness through dieting and losing weight. I guess her idea of true happiness just isn't mine.

Thanks for the link! Great srticle!

Happiness through dieting and weight loss, eh? I dunno, I found ED and the deepest depression of my life (despite thinness- gasp!)... to each his own.
