The "Piggy You" diet doll

Just in case you thought you'd seen everything, take a look at this dinosaur: the "Piggy You" diet doll, patented in 1991.

The doll attaches to your refrigerator with magnets along its tush. The charming caption underneath it is meant as instructions, I guess. Instructions for self-flagellation.

I really don't think I can express my thoughts about this any better than Elizabeth Valeri already did. Except to say thank God this doll never made it past the conceptual stage. At least I don't think it did.

What I want to know, is why are so many of these (supposedly) health-related things offered as "You do not fit the standard of PERFECT so you deserve to suffer"?

(I've seen other pig-related supposed diet aids, including an "alarm" you put in your fridge that oinks when the light comes on. Yech.)

Why not, instead, say, "I went for a walk today - yay me." or "I avoided excessive stress today - yay me" or "I love my body - yay me"

I'm coming to the conclusion that women are taught from an early age to punish themselves. I'm not sure why but it sucks and I'd like it to stop.

Ricki, we HAVE to be the ones to put the "yay me" words in our head EVEN IF the bullies are hoping we see ourselves as ugly or gross. They may always be there. : (
So...even if you don't fully believe it I hope you begin telling yourself how wonderful you are exactly as you are. Try to remember that no one will be more or less affected than you by what you choose to say or do in your life. Be kind to yourself and choose you!
The doll only reveals more anal retentive thinking from an ED, eh Harriet? Good bonfire material.

Exactly, Mary. It's got to come from us. From inside us.

My mother used to tell me to smile even if I didn't feel happy. When I was younger I thought that was hypocritical and pointless. Now I understand that sometimes the smile comes before the happy feeling.

It's the same with feeling good about yourself. Sometimes you have to say the words even if you don't believe them at all. And you find, somewhere down the line, that you begin to feel it.
