Has your family been denied insurance coverage for an eating disorder?

I got a call this morning from a staffer at Good Morning America, looking for families to profile and potentially help with insurance coverage. If you're interested please get in touch ASAP.

I have clients/families in mind that I'd like to contact about this. How do I get in touch with you?

Actually, get in touch with the production assistant directly: Lauren McCurdy, lmccurdy@fordham.edu. Good luck.

I had 30 days of treatment 6 years ago when I was 18. My mom took out a second mortgage on our house to pay for it. Our house was foreclosed two years ago. since then, my mom has had a breakdown and had to quit her job, etc...Basically the past few months of my life have been hell, and therapy once a week isn't enough for me anymore. I knew I needed help, so I finally got the nerve to say something therapist. However, my insurance won't cover eating disorder treatment. I can't eat; everything tastes weird and I have no appetite. I am at the lowest weight I have ever been. I am scared and although I am trying really hard to get my act together, I can't do it on my own. I have lost all hope. I am scared

My name is Julie, I am 24 and in working on recovery from Anorexia. I have been in many treatment settings over the last year and half, with my most extensive stay in an inpatient/residential facility for 7.5 months. Like many of my friends, insurance denied coverage for the great majority of my stay, placing the cost of my recovery on my family. Many of my close friends, who were struggling severely, and in need of inpatient treatment, were kicked out by their insurance companies, because they were "not sick enough". My family and i would be willing to participate in anything that could help others get insurance coverage in the future.

This is a huge issue for me. I went to treatment for binge eating/ bulimia last year, and the coverage was messed up, so restrictive, so NOTHING! It is over now, and I ended up paying for the whole thing out of pocket- it was a huge down payment we had been saving up for for the future house we were intending to get. I will take quality of life over a house any day, but it was still a terrible experience.

This is such a huge issue (especially with Cigna) with ending up hassling you until you give up, or it is too late in other cases. It is not something I want to rehash- but I just wanted to comment and say that it exists... I think that 90% of the patients were paying out of pocket (somehow)...
