Interacting with Jewish people 101: Don't say, "you don't look Jewish."
Or, interacting with people 101: Don't say, "you don't look (insert aspect of self here)."
Lately, I've been getting this "compliment" -- "you don't look 40" -- and I get that queasy thankfulness when someone says it. I want to say, "it's the fat, it makes me look younger" but I usually don't.
I also get "I didn't know you were Jewish" -- I don't know what to say when someone says that, as if it were something you could tell within a few seconds of meeting someone. I bring it to the forefront often so that doesn't happen too much, but I happen to be in a place where there aren't many Jews or a large Jewish community, so it does surprise some people to find out I'm Jewish. Luckily, I don't have to worry about people not realizing I'm fat :)
Thanks for posting this... I might otherwise not have seen it.
I do look Jewish, and for many years lived in a place where there weren't that many Jews. Or where at least a significant percentage of the population had never actually met a Jew. And boy did I get some weird questions. LIke, "Do Jews believe in God?" And "Do Jews celebrate birthdays?" My favorite: "Do Jews speak Hanukkan?"
Um, yeah, but only in our secret blood rituals involving small Christian children.
I just love this video. I'm a big fan of poetry and this one really speaks to me. No one should ever tell you that you don't look like someone of your ethnicity. That's just wrong. We are who we are and if you can't except that, then that's just too bad.
Not Jewish but love the video. That girl can rock it and tell it like it is! She's funny too and brings up a good point that "you are your people". I agree 100% with everything she said! Thanks for the link! You don't have to be Jewish to totally love this video and it's message!
